Acharya Lama Dawa was born in Bhutan in 1973 and was ordained as a monk as a teenager. From 1991-2000 he studied Buddhist philosophy, rituals and English with Lama Kelzang at Shri Nalanda University in Rumtek, Sikkim, India. He graduated with the Acharya title. From 2003-2007 he completed a three-year traditional retreat led by Bokar Rinpoche in Mirik, Darjeeling, India. During the retreat and in the years that followed, Lama Dawa received numerous teachings and initiations from H.H. the XVII. Karmapa, as well as Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Gyaltsab Rinpoche and Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. After successfully completing his training, he was employed as a secretary in the Rumtek monastery administration.
In October 2009, H.H. Karmapa and his general secretary Drupon Rinpoche sent him to Germany as resident lama for the TTC-Hamburg.

Von 1991-2000 studierte er an der Shri-Nalanda-Universität in Rumtek, Sikkim, Indien zusammen mit Lama Kelzang buddhistische Philosophie, Rituale und Englisch. Er schloss sein Studium mit dem Acharya-Titel ab. Von 2003-2007 absolvierte er ein traditionelles Drei-Jahres-Retreat unter der Leitung von Bokar Rinpoche in Mirik, Darjeeling, Indien. Im Retreat und in den folgenden Jahren erhielt Lama Dawa zahlreiche Unterweisungen und Einweihungen von S.H. dem XVII. Karmapa, sowie von Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche, Gyaltsab Rinpoche und Sangye Nyenpa Rinpoche. Nach erfolgreichem Abschluss seiner Ausbildung wurde er als Sekretär in der Klosterverwaltung von Rumtek eingesetzt.
Im Oktober 2009 sandte S.H. Karmapa und sein General-Sekretär Drupon Rinpoche ihn als Resident-Lama für das TTC-Hamburg nach Deutschland.
